Check out Mickey Finn!
By Becky Majors
You may have noticed their
name in the Blues News calendar or heard their schedule on KKFI.
Or, maybe you’ve had the chance to see them perform.
Their name is the Mickey Finn Band and they’ve been together
only since January 2006. They
may be a new band, but they have a solid sound and the members are
certainly not new to the music scene.
Lead vocalist and bassist is
Paul Greenlease – a familiar name to musicians in
Kansas City
. Paul gives private music
lessons, and he has played with some of the best in
Kansas City
such as Bobby Carson, Dan Doran, Max Groove, Neon Blue, Cobalt
Project, Big John Amaro, and even Percy Sledge.
Paul is probably best known for his long stint with the Bob
Harvey Band. Paul’s
vocals are strong and he performs a wide variety of favorites, but his
blues tunes are off the charts. You
can always expect a quick-witted joke, a smile, and a great
performance from Paul. Besides
being a talented musician, he’s a friend to all fellow musicians and
music lovers in
Kansas City
.
On drums is Mike Patrum also
well known on the
Kansas City
music scene. Mike moved
from Garden City,
Kansas
, to
Lawrence
to attend KU and major in music. Mike,
at one point, joined Kerry Livgren of
Kansas
fame in a new band. Lonnie
and Debbie Ray, and Protocol have also added to Mike’s music
experience. Mike is one of
the best on drums and truly an asset to this band.
Rounding out the three-member
band is Quinn Harvey. Although
the youngest member of Mickey Finn, Quinn is not a stranger to the
music scene. Quinn has
grown up with a guitar in hand and learned from one of the finest, his
father, Bob Harvey. Quinn
is an excellent guitarist and has been blessed with a great voice.
Quinn can not only belt out the old blues tunes, but also sings
newer rock. He also joins
his father and brother, Sam, in performing blues and bluegrass in area
churches.
As
you may have noticed, the Mickey Finn Band does a variety of covers.
Some of their favorites are “Rollin’ on the River,”
“Tore Down,” “Waitin’ for the Bus” “Leave Your Hat On,”
“Susie Q,” and “Big Leg Woman.”
I recently heard Paul do “Sultans of Swing” and it just
blew me away! You
know I’m a blues lover, but I try to catch the Mickey Finn Band
every chance I get. They
satisfy the blues yearning and provide a great evening of fun.
